“It’s been a few years since I have connected on a Mule Deer. In fact, while on this hunt we were recapping how many stalks we had been on over the last couple years without even releasing an arrow. I have hunted Mule Deer quite a bit over the last 10-12 years with a lot of success but the failed attempts have most certainly surpassed the successful ones.

We spent the first couple days essentially familiarizing ourselves with the area, figuring out where most of the deer were and where they tended to bed on all of this public land. After that the stalks began. It seemed like every attempt we made, the deer always had the advantage by bedding in the perfect spot to catch us moving in. However, on Day 5 Chandler and I spent the entire day following a buck. As sunset neared he stood up from his bed, caught a quick glimpse of us then bounded out to 26 yards before stopping broadside. Seconds later I sailed my arrow right over his back. With Mule Deer it can sometimes be a now or never decision where you need to shoot quickly. This was one of those instances and I simply rushed my shot!

I used to really let moments of failure get the best of me but I am learning to embrace them , learn from the mistake and keep pushing forward. Day 6 came (the final day) and we were ready to make it happen. After following a couple bucks around most of the morning we literally stumbled across this buck with a few others. We crawled into 51 yards, a small buck caught our movement, stood up and as he was leaving alerted this buck. As he stood, I drew my bow, anchored in and released my arrow. The shot ended up being forward which I knew immediately. However, I have been incredibly impressed with the Mega Meat and the damage the broadhead does. I most certainly had my doubts on the shot but thankfully this public land buck was laying at the end of the blood trail!

I can’t thank God enough for the path he has chosen for me in life. I’m a blessed man.” - @shawn_luchtel

"After not hunting mule deer much at all over the past few years, I was excited to kick the season off this year in Montana. The opening week of archery season could not have been much better honestly. We were in deer constantly and were on good bucks nearly every day.

After a couple of blown stalks early in the hunt, I wasn’t discouraged and figured it would all come together in due time. My confidence started to dwindle somewhat though after a couple tough days locating bucks and only one day remaining in the hunt.

Then on Day 6, like someone flipped a switch, we located several good bucks and one in particular bedded in a great spot to make a play on. After navigating a couple big coulees, we made our way down the ridge top that he was bedded below and got into position. The wind was light, but enough to conceal any noise we made on the approach.

Not long after we were in position, I felt the wind die and hit me in the back of the neck. I immediately clipped on my release and got ready as I could see that the buck knew something wasn’t quite right. He stood up below us, blocked from the steep cliff and walked away. I was able to stop him at 30 yards and release my arrow. A short distance later he was down and I was wrapping my hands around my first mule deer in 5 years.
